Maryann Mussared
READ is an installation of found books, stacked, folded or arranged into new forms.
Maryann Mussared is a mixed media artist whose practice encompasses painting, printmaking, textiles and arranging found objects. In this exhibition she examines and celebrates the book as well as questions the seemingly unstoppable, almost daily advances in technology and how we manage the overwhelming quantity of information to which we have access.
After nearly 600 years, the book is under threat from the inexorable march of technology. With the advent of online publishing and e-books becoming more commonplace, it is possible that existing books will become obsolete and cease to have a tangible form in the very near future.
Will the e-book take over and render the book an obsolete object? Indeed, many recently published books are already out of date. The ever growing popularity of Wikipedia means millions of sets of encyclopaedia and reference books are now virtually obsolete.
What will happen to all the billions of books on shelves around the world? Will their disposal place increased demands on our already overstretched landfill? Or will our fondness for these everyday objects, so tactile and tangible, at least acknowledge that they represent more than their content and reclassify them as decorative, if not anachronistic objects.
