Chinese-born An Pan’s paintings explore the never-ending beauty of poppies, a symbol to him of the renewing power of colour and cultural connection he has found in Australia. Setting aside his landscapes and portraiture, Pan has devoted this show to work interpreting the many faces of what are known in China as the “beautiful ladies.”
Migrating from China to Australia, 18 years ago, Yifeng Tan had to confront a number of obstacles – learning English, earning a living and coming to grips with a different culture. But he had the freedom to paint how and what he wished. The world he paints is one that speaks of his Chinese origins and of current homes in both Australia and China. He uses ambiguity to assist in the articulation (although full articulation is not a desired outcome) of the individual’s place in a multicultural world.
