The ACT Community Arts Office and Belconnen Arts Centre Inc. are delighted to invite members of the public to celebrate more than 30 artists who are making a unique mark in the arts world. Individual artists, schools and the Paperworks group have worked in a broad range of media creating a diverse range of artworks that will be sure to inspire their audiences. Several artists are exhibiting in a professional gallery for the first time, others are more experienced. They have all worked co-operatively to plan and present these works, bringing them together to explore concepts of identity, accessibility, connection, wellbeing and acceptance.
The exhibition title‘artist/proof’ derives from the printmaker’s reference to the first proof of a limited edition run being the most valuable.
The ACT Community Arts Office’s artsAbility Officer Caro Roach says, “It’s been really great working with the Belconnen Arts Centre staff to create an inclusive process for the artist/proof artists. The artists can’t wait to show their work to friends and family and share it with the general public at the opening event.”
In a natural progression from still to moving images, several new short film pieces will be screened in the exhibition. It will also be an opportunity for people to register for next year’s 2010 community film making project Through a Different Lens, which will also be launched during the evening by the National Film and Sound Archive.
The evening will also include special entertainment in the beautiful foyer of the Belconnen Arts Centre overlooking Lake Ginninderra. Jump to the fun beats of Monkey Drum and drumUp, travel to faraway places with world music by Heart and Soul Singers, be moved by dance artist Katie Senior and friends, and soak up the sweet sounds of musician TJ James.
“The partnerships in this project have been amazing. This project is a fantastic example of how much can be done when a group of organisations and funding sponsors work together,” says ACT Disability and Community Services Commissioner Mary Durkin. “The artist/proof exhibition and Through a Different Lens project are important steps to address issues of inequality and exclusion. They ensure that people in the community have access to venues and opportunities to participate in cultural activities, showcasing the talent and skills that artists in the disability community bring to the arts in the ACT.”
artist/proof is presented by the ACT Community Arts Office, in partnership with the Belconnen Arts Centre and supported by dhcs Disability ACT.
