CARTOONING FOR FUN with Bob Jankowski

Saturday 2:00–4:00pm

A visual exploration through aspects of what makes an effective cartoon including expressions and features on face types, composing backgrounds and narratives, sense of movement and action, attention to detail and pattern. These elements to be incorporated into an environment enhancing character and developing the details to embellish a story.

The 5 week course will explore these aspects in detail, concentrating on the elements of design in effective image making.

A range of materials will also be tried out and participants will be advised and encouraged to bring along their favourite marking implements.

There will be a focus towards a final project which incorporates all elements developed over the length of the course.

Course outline:

1) Features and Expressions: Say cheese please with Nana’s flashing teeth and Pop’s sparkling specs

2) Proportions, Scale and Perspective: The short and the tall of it all including body parts and other accessories

3) Contrast, Patterns and Textures: To blank or not to blank…

4) Composition and Arrangement: Hold your breath… and watch this space!

5) Message Bank and Lettering Effects: Wham! Splat!! Huh?... And other explosives in a showcase show down!
