trace/retrace
3 May - 26 May 2013

To be opened at 4pm Friday 3 May by
Emeritus Professor David Williams AM ANU, Research School of Humanities and the Arts

trace/retrace is a result of a residency at Strathnairn, where artist Gabriella Hegyes has used found objects and natural materials to create works in various media which reflect the site’s natural and cultural history.

The journey to Strathnairn began last year, as part of the first stage of Gabriella’s residency. She explored five sites from her home west of the Blue Mountains to Lake George. These works became part of her exhibition
Mapping at Belconnen Art Centre in 2012.

Her residency at Strathnairn continues until the 26 May working with community groups and conducting workshops during Terrain: Mapping Strathnairn Land Art Event 11 May - 26 May.

Meet the artist: 2pm Sunday 19 May

PERFORMANCE

The Hollow - Agatha Christie

17th to 25th May

Belconnen Theatre

image_for_the_hollow

Tempo Theatre announce: The Queen of Crime returns to Belconnen.

"A family gathering explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow.”

Director Jon Elphick, who has previously directed 6 Agatha Christie plays, the most recent being the highly acclaimed, The Mousetrap, at Belconnen in 2011 returns to direct The Hollow.

The setting is ‘The Hollow’, the home of Sir Henry and Lady Lucy Angkatell, in the English country side, not too far from London.

The events take place over a weekend filled with poignant memories of happier days. All is not as it seems, for there are secrets and smouldering resentments which could explode into violence at any moment.

Dr John Cristow, whose personal life is decidedly less admirable than his professional one, is at the centre of it all. Throw into the mix a jealous cousin, a Hollywood film star and the lady of the house who wishes to arrange a marriage to save the family estate and murder is bound to be just around the corner.

Most had the opportunity, many had a motive, but who actually did the murder? Can Inspector Colquhoun, with the help of Sgt Penny, get to the bottom of it all? Join them in discovering ‘whodunit’ at Belconnen Theatre from May 17th to 25th."

Bookings through Canberra Ticketing on 6275 2700 or canberraticketing.com.au.

MEDIA RELEASE

Capital Arts Patrons’
Organisation (CAPO)

15th to 23rd November

Canberra Museum
and Gallery (CMAG)

A NEW HOME AS CAPO TURNS 30

CAPO President Neil Doody today announced the Capital Arts Patrons’
Organisation (CAPO) will mark its 30th anniversary this year by moving
its popular contemporary art exhibition and auction to Canberra Museum
and Gallery (CMAG).

CAPO provides a major source of support for local artists through their
generous research, travel and cash awards. Funds are raised by donations
and in-kind support from local business, ticket sales as well as by the sale
of donated works of art through CAPO’s annual high-profile exhibition
and auction.

“CAPO is very excited to be moving our annual exhibition and auction to
what we see as Canberra’s premier regional museum and arts space. With
CAPO turning 30, CMAG 15, and Canberra of course partying for its 100th,
this year’s cocktail auction is set to be a real cracker!” Mr Doody said.

“This move will create an even more sustainable and prestigous event,
and will expose the work of the artists involved to an ever broader
audience,” he added.

“CAPO’s exhibition and auction is a perfect fit with our role in showcasing
and supporting excellence in our region’s visual arts. I am simply delighted
to welcome the event to Canberra Museum and Gallery,” said CMAG
Director, Shane Breynard.

The CAPO exhibition and auction has previously been held at the
National Archives of Australia and in 2012 at M16 Artspace in Griffith.

The week-long exhibition program highlights donated artworks and
incorporates floor talks from arts professionals to assist buyers in making
informed investments. It culminates in the CAPO 30 Auction, a cocktail
event with live and silent auctions of donated artworks.

CAPO is a volunteer, non-profit organisation that has supported the ACT
region’s artists through fundraising activities for the last 30 years. Since its
establishment in 1983, CAPO has disbursed over $1.8 million dollars through its Grants program to over 300 arts practitioners and organisations. CAPO awards and grants are generously supported by donations and sponsorship from the Canberra arts and business communities, and national and international organisations.

CAPO supports the highest standards of excellence in the arts. Innovative
endeavours that contribute to cultural development in Canberra and the
region are encouraged. The grants are awarded to fund those proposals
that will have the most significant cultural impact in the local community.

Board members serve CAPO on a voluntary basis and profits from
the annual fundraising event are directed to arts philanthropy through
CAPO’s grant program.

The CAPO 30 art exhibition will be held at CMAG from 15 November 2013,
and the awards night and auction party on Saturday 23rd November 2013.

ARTISTS' OPPORTUNITIES

The Icarus Project

An Opportunity For Artists, Writers & Musicians

The Icarus Project & Putting Canberra Culture On The Global Map For Our Centenary Year

Seth Godin, one of the world’s thought leaders today, has created a global creative project connected to the launching of his new book called the “The Icarus Deception”.

There will be a global event initiated out of New York initially, but with a total of 955+ global communities signed up so far, to share creative inspiration globally.

With Canberra’s Centenary looming and our community goals of making the world aware of Canberra’s soul, our creative community of writers, artists and musicians have much to contribute to this goal.

Our community of creative artists, writers and musicians could participate in this event and expose their talents, showcase their creative projects and admit any human challenges they have had in creating their masterpiece, or in executing their projects as well as informing us of “what matters” to them.

This is an opportunity not to be passed up if you are a Canberra artist, musician or writer, and you are passionate and committed to your creative pursuits.

Just follow the rules below and send us your video clip to upload to the YouTube playlist we’ve created. It’s a “not-for-profit” event, so it’s not about selling. But it is about sharing with the world what you have created!

You have to answer these three questions:
The assignment: Tell the group about your art. (1) What have you created? (2) What frightened you? (3) What matters?

There are rules of participation and more information on the Icarus Project here: http://www.squidoo.com/IcarusSession

More info: 0431 860 607
or email suzanne@creativeknowhow.com.au

Hope you will join us. This will be an awesome creative project!

DYAD PARTNER

Dance Therapy

March to September 2013

My name is Eva Damarjati. This year I am studying Dance Therapy at International Dance Therapy Institute of Australia and I require a Dyad partner to dyad with as one of the course requirements.

Please find information below on what a dyad is, the process, and the commitment required.

What's a Dyad?
The Dyad is an experience of being witnessed in movement by another, and of witnessing (observing) another's movement. There will be no music involved in this and the person is to move from within.

The process:
In the pair one dancer moves for 30-40 minutes, then speaks for 5-10 minutes about her experience of movement (whatever she wishes to share) and then writes some notes in her journal. The other dancer witnesses the first dancer's movement, but does not comment on it. She writes about her process of witnessing. The pairs change. The second dancer moves for 30-40 minutes and the first dancer witnesses her movement. The second dancer speaks about her experience for 5-10 minutes and then makes some notes in her journal. The witness writes about her process of witnessing.

What do I want in a Dyad partner?
I want a person who is open, willing and committed to explore movement/dance for healing and change. For you to put in the required hours and commit to the process. Only one partner for the whole process is required.

What level of commitment is required?
20 hours of dyading are required - it may be 15 sessions at 1 and a half hours or 10 sessions of 2 hours each and to be completed within 6–9 months.
I prefer to do 1 and a half hours session weekly or fortnightly. If something comes up or a 2 hour slot suits better, I am willing to be flexible to change this. You are required to participate as well and this means being a mover and being a witness.

If you are interested in exploring movement/dance for healing and change and willing to be my dyad partner, please contact me on 0424 802 586 or eva.damarjati@gmail.com.

DANCE WORK EXPERIENCE

Ausdance ACT

Canberra Theatre have a unique opportunity for 2 very lucky dancers to work with Sydney Dance Company and Australian Dance Theatre. Can you please forward onto any of your students that might be suitable.

1. In the week beginning 10 June, ADT with G. It has been quite some time since ADT has been to Canberra and this would be a great opportunity for a dancer to be in the space.

2. In the week beginning 9 September, SDC with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for Project Rameau. SDC has always been supportive of our WEX students and I would expect this will be a special show as it brings together two of Australia’s premier performing groups.

Work Experience application forms are available on our website. Go to About Us > Work Experience and download the form. Please complete and return these forms as soon as possible as we are keen to allocate the placements.

DANCE EXCHANGE PROPOSAL

Dance Practitioner Exchange Proposal

Overview
To exchange practice, ideas and build links and partnerships with another community dance organisation, Powys Dance (Wales) would like to propose the swapping of dance practitioners with ausdance (Australia).

About Us
Powys Dance is a professional community dance company that has been bringing dance to the people of Powys since 1979. Our practice revolves around three strategic areas: dance in education, dance in the community and working with dance through the medium of Welsh. We have 3.5 Dance Development Practitioners delivering our programme of classes and projects across the county and also at our dance studio in Llandrindod Wells. The company also has a Welsh Language Apprentice and a full time manager. We are funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Powys County Council.

About Powys
Powys is an extensive, largely upland and extremely rural county covering 2000 square miles, that is about a quarter of the area of Wales. With only 1 person in every 10 acres (4 hectares) it is one of the most sparsely populated local authority areas in England and Wales.

The county has tremendous landscape assets, from the dramatic mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the rolling hills of Radnor Forest to the Berwyn Mountains in the north, and some of Britain's most spectacular river valleys - the Severn, Wye and Usk - sweeping through its glorious scenery.

The economy is based on agriculture and tourism, with high self-employment and small businesses predominating, and an important contribution to employment opportunities from the public sector.
An average of about 20% of the population of Powys are Welsh speakers, but this varies tremendously from town to town.

The Proposal
We would like to investigate the possibility of a dance practitioner or community dance artist from ausdance being seconded to Powys Dance and in return, we would second Bethan Smith to you for a period of six months. The seconded dancers would undertake each other’s duties, delivering classes, projects and /or performances according to the needs of the host company.
How this will work practically and logistically would need to be discussed in much more detail should you be interested in the broad idea, but one way in which it might work would be for the ‘home’ companies to continue to pay their dancer.  The host company would assist the visiting dancer in finding accommodation but it would be up to the dancer to pay these costs. Air fares could be paid for by the dancers or the dancers might be able to fundraise to cover this cost.

About Bethan

Bethan’s role in Powys Dance covers dance in the community, dance in education & also promoting the welsh language through Dance. She teaches community classes in very rural areas, teaching 4-7 year olds, 8-11 year olds, 11-18 year olds, adults dance exercise class, over 60’s dance class, adults with learning disabilities dance class, these groups work towards 2 performances a year, one in the summer and one in the winter.

Bethan’s typical week:-

Friday - Adults with learning disabilities dance session, admin work in the office

Bethan would like to do this exchange to experience how another organization works, to develop her practice, to bring that experience back to Wales with her. She is hardworking, organised, full energy, enthusiastic and would easily fit in well to another organisation.
