120 Birds

19th and 20th May

The Street Theatre
15 Childers St,
Canberra City West

120 BIRDS: smart, stylish take on social dance

Canberra producer/choreographer Liz Lea was the toast of the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with her ravishing work 120 BIRDS mining Anna Pavlova’s legacy to create a brilliant expose of the rise and fall of an Australian dance company that toured the world in the 1920s. Now this smart, stylish take on social dance is set to sparkle in Canberra as Liz Lea and Company present the Australian Premiere for a strictly limited season at The Street Theatre from 19th May before heading off to Sydney ’s DANCE BITES FESTIVAL.

image_for_120_birds

Mixing live performance with fascinating vintage film footage,120 BIRDS is a new work based around the quirks of international touring of 1920s dance artists. Company Elle is born in Australia in 1923 after Anna Pavlova first visits the country. Madam Lou raises and drags her company of four on globe-trotting adventures following Pavlova’s footsteps and meeting other companies like Denishawn and celebrities such as the enigmatic designer Florence Broadhurst, professional swimmer turned film star Annette Kellerman and the Australia cricket team.

Lea undertook extensive research for the work whilst a 2009 Fellow at the National Film and Sound Archive who are supporting 120 BIRDS by giving full rights to all film and sound images used. Lea plays the company 'Madam'/Director, recounting the story of her fictional dance troupe and its rags to riches – and rags again – story and is joined by fellow performers Natalie Ayton, Melanie Faydherbede, Maudave (Palomares), and Miranda Wheen.

Over the past five years Lea has begun adding speech to her choreography and performances, and 120 BIRDS sees narrative and speech take centre stage. The distinctive choreographic style uses gesture, expression and physicality, with dancers fleet-footing it through the various crazes such as the smoldering tango, racy Charleston and ever popular waltz.

A collaborative painting exhibition by emerging artists

Artwork by Margy Duke and Kaila Smith

Artists will collaborate on the centre-piece in the gallery during the first week of the exhibition before the official opening Tuesday May 29th @ 6pm by Margo Neale - Senior Research Fellow, Senior Curator and Principal Indigenous Advisor to the Director at the National Museum of Australia

As part of Belconnen Community Service’s Reconciliation Action Plan, gallery@bcs has commissioned two emerging artists – one Aboriginal, and one non-Aboriginal – to collaborate on an exhibition for Reconciliation Week 2012. Fourty-four yr old Aboriginal and New Zealand Maori, Margy Duke, will work with twenty-three year old Kaila Smith to create an exhibition that not only showcases each artists work, but explores the process of collaboration in the context of reconciliation.

The artists will work together on this ‘centre piece’ in the gallery over the first week of the exhibition so that audiences can observe the development of the collaboration.

Margy Duke was the gallery@bcs NAIDOC Week artist in 2011 and Kaila Smith held her first solo exhibition in December 2010.

EXHIBITION
Sacha Jeffrey
Habitat
works on paper

7th March to
28th May

Soju Girl,
Melbourne Building, 41/43-45 Northbourne Ave,
Canberra City

We are excited to present Habitat with the support of Soju Girl, restaurant and café for contemporary Asian fusion food. In this context 30 works on paper will be on show from Wednesday 7th March until 28th May 2012.

Habitat is an exhibition of new works on paper by Sacha Jeffrey that celebrates difference in the graphic tradition. His etchings, ink drawings and lithograph collages address the alienation people experience in a world where borders are elastic, yet persist in constricting many of us. Sacha is curious about the impact of language, tradition and habits that are often manifest in images. These works deliberately hide their origins but we can decode them via familiar signs, gestures, colours, animals and patterns that we might have noticed in our habitat

The closing date for entries into this years’ Tuggeranong Rotary Youth Art Award is fast approaching, with submissions due in to Tuggeranong Arts Centre Gallery by Wednesday 30 May. Submissions are accepted from artists between the ages of 15 and 25 years, in a range of media.

The Tuggeranong Rotary Youth Art Award is an example of a strong arts and community partnership, which gives voice to its young people. As a local award, it has continued to grow since its inception in 1994 and has been supported by local sponsors, critics, media and collectors. DISABILITY AWARENESS PROGRAM

Everyone
Everyday Series

Developed by BLITS and Disability ACT

Everyone Everyday Curriculum Resource

A key element of the program is a curriculum resource for ACT teachers to raise student awareness about the inclusion of people with disability.  The resource will include a set of classroom activities that are evidence based and align with the new Australian Curriculum and the ACT Schools Curriculum Framework – Every Chance to Learn.

The curriculum resource will initially be developed and trialled with primary school teachers of students in years 3 to 5. We hope to trial the resource in Term 3, 2012.

Consultations on the Curriculum Resource
We are currently finalising a discussion paper to guide consultations on the curriculum resource.  We expect to release the paper on the BLITS website at www.blits.org.au in December 2011.

Details of consultation opportunities will be updated in the coming weeks.
If you would like to attend a workshop or make a submission, please contact
us on the details below.

Everyone, Everyday Competition – 101 Actions to Include People with Disability

To celebrate International Day of Disability 2011 and raise awareness about
the program, we are launching an ideas competition for ACT school students about what everyone can do everyday to include people with disability.

We are seeking sponsorship of prizes for the Everyone Everyday Competition that are suitable for ACT school students and their teachers.

Are you a business or community organisation who may be able to assist?
Or perhaps you could forward this request to individuals or groups within your network?

We are seeking:

• Fun prizes, just for the individual student

• Group prizes that students can share with their classmates as well as prizes for individual teachers

• Gifts of kindness for people with disability – for example, things that assist people with disability to socialise and engage in business, the sports and the arts.

The prizes will be given out in June 2012.

If you can assist with sponsorship of a prize please contact Lisa McClelland at Disability ACT on 6205 2122 or email lisa.mcclelland@act.gov.au

DONATIONS

Fashionably Early

8th August to
15th September

Gallery of Australian Design

Fashionably Early is a national fashion exhibition to be held at the Gallery of Australian Design from 8 August – 15 September.

The exhibition is an exciting opportunity for the Canberra fashion community to host a national think-tank in the form of an exhibition. The project presents an important opportunity for Canberra to be part of a vibrant discussion about what innovation means to a rapidly changing fashion industry nationally and globally. What does a fashion design enterprise look like in a post-industrial city?

Fashion has a tendency to fall outside the cultural funding available to other creative disciplines but, if Australian Fashion design is to become more innovative it is important that it continues to develop its non- commercial zone of practice. Fashionably Early is led by curator Kate Shaw, Kate’s creative practice is concerned with critical design thinking and design discourse. She is interested in projects that bring collaborators together from different disciplines to reframe conventional ways of experiencing and understanding design, and is particularly committed to the future of Canberra Fashion.Kate’s curatorial intent for Fashionably Early is to facilitate a dynamic dialogue between students, graduates, educators and academics from six national fashion design schools, and to enable participation from industry, local design visionaries, entrepreneurs, and cultural influencers. A cross disciplinary exhibition design team will use spatial design, sound, digital media, performance film and photography to engage participants in understanding the design vision and risk taking required to establish a vibrant high quality local fashion identity.

How You Can Help
This exhibition is self-funded. The highly motivated exhibition delivery team are all working on a volunteer basis; we aim to raise $10,000 through sponsorship, fundraising and donations.  These funds will pay for the exhibition fit out the website and guest speakers. We have the opportunity to collect donations from supporters of this project through the Australian Cultural Fund AbaF. AbaF has a unique tax status through which donors can make a tax deductable gift to AbaF and express a preference that the donation go to a particular artist or arts organization.  You can make donations to Fashionably Early through the Australian Cultural Fund web site, donate to: curator Kate Shaw http://www.abaf.org.au/business/workplace-giving/artists-projects/kate-shaw.html
All funds will go towards the delivery of the exhibition. There will be no profit generated from this event.

We would appreciate your promotion and your advocacy that interested parties donate to this important cultural event supporting the future of Canberra and Australian fashion. If, rather than making a tax deductable donation, you are interested in sponsoring Fashionably Early please contact Penny Boyer. penny@fashionablyearly.com

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN CANBERRA
a practical pathway into the complex world of
Antonin Artaud
A journey for teachers,actors,directors, students,and
ANYONE WITH A ZEST FOR LIFE AND ART

SO WHAT IS IT ABOUT

Too often Artaud is studied and presented as being only about violence and darkness. It is as if his words were isolated and abstracted to a label which is harsh and alienating: only violent and only shocking.

While acknowledging that much of Artaud's thought was contradictory, we can take the notion of a "body without organs" and find it's impossibility as a liberating concept for anyone involved in artistic and creative thinking and working ....

To read more and find out exactly what you will get click here.

SO WHAT WILL YOU GET

The Evasive and Elusive Artaud and The Theatre Of Release Workshop will offer you:

  • a new paradigm (a M.E.S.H.) through which to approach the work of Antonin Artaud

  • techniques for using space to focus and provide safety for participants and self

and much more.

To read more and find out what skills, understandings and approaches you will gain, click here.

HOW DO YOU SIGN UP AND WHAT WILL IT COST

This is a 2 hour workshop for adults and students of Drama over the age of 16 years. For only 2 hours of your life, you can step into a new paradigm of creative thinking and activity. And going by the testimonials from the Drama NSW State Conference, this is not an exaggerated claim.
