Closet Creatives: An Art Class for Absolute Beginners

Do you dream about making art but have trouble getting started? Do you think it’s just people born with a paintbrush in their hand that get to make art? This course is for anyone who wants to be more creative but doesn’t know where to begin. It caters for complete beginners and explores painting, drawing, collage and how to start a visual diary. Most importantly, the course encourages participants to have fun, be creative and increase their confidence with making art.
Rebecca Blackburn is an artist and writer with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School. She has taught art and creativity classes in Australia and Oxford and is currently writing a book about creativity.
|30 Oct:||Creativity and Drawing|
Discuss what creativity is and what the barriers are to creativity. Learn about visual diaries and how to use one. Use graphite pencils to do a drawing exercise.
|6 Nov:||Mark Making|
Explore mark-making with a variety of materials including graphite pencils, watercolour pencils, oil pastel and pens.
|20 Nov:||Exploring Watercolour|
Explore watercolour using a variety of techniques and materials including watercolour pencils. Learn about colour theory.
|27 Nov:||Drawing Skills|
Explore drawing via simple drawing exercises using a variety of materials including graphite pencils, watercolour pencils, pen, oil pastel and watercolour.
|4 Dec:||Composition and Collage|
Learn the elements of composition and how to draw thumbnail sketches. Make collages on the basis of these compositional sketches using a variety of papers.
|11 Dec:||Doodle an Artwork|
Find out how a doodle can be the start of an artwork. We also investigate techniques for generating ideas for new artwork by drawing items around the house.
