Mindfulness Stretching practices release the brain from the stresses of modern life and reset the body from the chronic aches of modern life patterns. The practices bring a solid mind-body connection with a profound and compelling mindfulness. The practices will move you into alpha and theta brain-state patterns; these are meditative brain-state patterns. In these brain-states the stress hormone (cortisol) is turned off. The practices fundamentally reduce chronic muscle tightness with clever but easy and accessible stretches. This improves everyday comfort within the body and fundamentally reduces the tightness of modern life patterns.
Working progressively around the body, we deliberately contract and then relax each of the major muscle groups. Once all the major muscle groups are relaxed the whole body is relaxed! When the whole body is relaxed it sends a constant stream of bio-feedback messages to the brain that “everything is fine” (it’s the opposite of holding mental tension in your body.) The practices are particularly beneficial for those with arms sore from computer work, sore lower back, stiff neck and/or chronically tight legs.
Mindfulness Stretching (formerly Flexibility Stretching) classes have helped hundreds of Canberrans since 2009. These group-based bodywork classes have participants really feel their body and bring their attention to the breath. David Heap has isolated and described the involuntary relaxation reflex, where the body cannot help but to relax. This reflex is integrated with detailed breath cueing to create a fundamentally unique practice.
From a distance, it looks like yoga, but it’s really quite different. There is no religiosity, no gongs, no chanting, no chakras and no Sanskrit; just your body, your breath and the involuntary relaxation reflex. There are variations which make the poses accessible for the those that are “stiff as a board” and the hyper-flexible alike. David will help you work around any soreness or injury with loads of variations that get to the major areas. No minimum level of flexibility or fitness is too low and, as the stretching occurs as your muscle is relaxing, it’s super safe. The atmosphere of the classes is really fun and supportive, there’s no ego and no competitiveness.
The classes continue weekly during the ACT school term. Mindfulness Stretching runs 9 weekly sessions across Canberra and the surrounding area, with four sessions at Belconnen Arts Centre. Make-ups and bonus classes can be done at any of David’s sessions (across Woden, Civic & Murrumbateman).
“Still can’t believe that only one class a week provides so much benefit. Thanks David!”
“My lower back pain from my desk job has greatly reduced. When I do get pain, I now know how to stretch it out.”
“Thanks for helping me find the ‘happy dad’ inside me.”
“I really like your style of teaching. I appreciate that you take the time to correct people’s poses and give positive feedback. This adds to the class and one of the reasons why I will come back. Thank you.”
