Portrait Painting for Beginners

Learn the basic techniques, step by step, on drawing and painting portraits with acrylics, beginning with composition and placement, learning the structure of the face, shading, toning and how-to mix flesh tones, as well as exploring different styles and techniques.
About Jenny Blake
Jenny Blake’s art practice is driven by an insatiable interest in people and how we navigate life in all its complexities. Blake works across mediums and materials. She has exhibited abstract landscapes, assemblage woodwork, seascapes and portraits. Blake completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at Canberra Institute of Technology and has managed a youth program using art to build self-esteem and resilience. She says, “I love to see students surprise themselves with what they can produce.”
Week 1 (24 October)
Composition and construction of the face. Basic guidelines for drawing a portrait. We will look at the “theory of three” and relationships between facial features.
Week 2 (31 October)
Shading the face using different techniques, such as crosshatch and smudging.
Week 3 (7 November)
Looking at the colour wheel, mixing skin colours. Painting tonal qualities.
Week 4 (14 November)
Exploring and experimenting with different techniques.
Week 5 (21 November)
Working with a mirror we will draw and commence painting our self-portrait.
Week 6 (28 November)
Completing our self-portrait.
All materials will be provided.
What to bring
Suitable footwear, painting apron or painting shirt.
Please note, enrolment closes one week prior to the first workshop.
Terms and conditions
- Refunds are available if requested at least one week (7 days) prior to the commencement of the workshop(s).
- Refunds requested within one week (7 days) of the commencement of the workshop(s) are only available in exceptional circumstances and must be supported by documentation (i.e. medical certificate).
- No refunds will be given after the commencement of the workshop(s).
- Partial refunds are not available if you are unable to attend individual workshops that are part of a workshop series.
