To celebrate NAIDOC and Our Languages Matter, join us for a FREE family festival of live music, dancing, food stalls, fun, face painting and hands on craft activities for all the family. Bring the family down to the lake to join in some traditional weaving or sit around the campfire and listen to some yarns.
Experience traditional Indigenous music and dancing by Maluerindi, the Wiradjuri Echoes and the ACT Torres Straight Islander Dancers; hear music from Johnny Huckle, Rachel Armstrong and our own Talk Blak group.
Free workshops and activities include making damper by the fire, remote control car painting, weaving workshops, face painting, storytelling and more.
What’s On at NAIDOC By The Lake 2017?
Heaps to see and do at NAIDOC by the Lake on Saturday the 8th of July… Our Languages Matter 2017. Join us at Belconnen Arts Centre between 11am – 3pm.
> Come and join the Kemarre Indigenous Women’s Group make bird and insect soft sculptures – drop in workshops running all day.
> Gungahlin Child and Family Centre are hosting loads of kids art and craft workshops, come and make something to take home – drop in workshops running all day.
> Meg and Ange from the Strong Womens Group can show you some traditional weaving techniques and the different baskets you can make – drop in workshops running all day.
> Be drawn in and then blown away by Johnny Huckle’s story telling.
> Come to see the indigenous music and dance performances scheduled throughout the day.
> munch on some yummy lunch and enjoy the bonfire and live music!
> You will be able to buy indigenous art and also find out about financial or legal advice and local and national indigenous tours.
