IGNITE: Connect Futures workshops, part of the IGNITE: Alternative Arts Academy, were presented at Canberra Glassworks and led by established artists and highly regarded tutors Kirstie Rae and Luna Ryan. Over ten weeks, participants have consolidated on previous glass workshop experience though moulding and making both open face and two-piece castings, fused samples, pate de verre tiles, slumped and mosaic pieces.

In choosing the concept of “home,” the artists have reflected on and expressed their feeling about experiences and a way of being that we all share. Each artist’s approach is uniquely individual, with some incorporating personal symbols, such as Jenelle Outhwaite’s butterfly, which refers to her hearing loss; Linda De Ridder’s sewing kit, through which she depicts herself as the family mender and problem solver; and Cam Michael’s caravan, which represents home as something that is not located in a fixed place, but is a feeling that is with us wherever we go.

As a medium, glass is gorgeously seductive and while it is strong and hard, it is also delicate and fragile. It is a poetic metaphor for the contradictory and wonderfully complex nature of the human condition.
