IGNITE: Makers Mural
IGNITE artists working with Tess Horwitz
Foyer Gallery > 4 August – 7 September 2018
This collaborative mural was led by local artist Tess Horwitz in partnership with IGNITE: Alternative Arts Academy artists Michael Byl, Keith Carfrae, Felicity Maher, Esme Jacobs, Rachael Flynn, Vera Delova, Tamsin Hnatiuk, Brian Allan, Jenelle Outhwaite, and Maria Cofinas. This mural will later be installed at The Link at Ginninderry.
As a starting point, the artists assisted each other to create life-sized outlines of their shadows. Inspired by imagining Belconnen Arts Centre in the future, the composition came to life as figures filled with colour and creative possibility. At the far left, Michael Bryl brings colourful people together. In the next figure, Felicity Maher has imagined a stage, dancers, exhibitions and delicious café offerings of doughnuts and cakes. Keith Carfrae has depicted himself as an artist in an expressionistic style, while Esme Jacobs brings Lake Ginninderra close to the action. In the centre panel, Rachael Flynn declares her love of pets and the wonders of natures. Vera Delova reflects on psychological and health challenges that concern her as an artist, while Tamsin Hnatiuk represents creativity as something fluid that nurtures and sustains the spirit. Brain Allan’s Tyrannosaurus urges us to join in the fun and offers a cup of tea from Jenelle Outhwaite’s pot. Jenelle’s figure overflows with symbols proclaiming the benefits of an active, creative and well-supported life. Maria Cofinas’ artistic spirit brightens panel three and the figure by Brian Allan (far right) suggests caring and nurturing relationships. Meanwhile, the butterfly of transformation alights in the foreground.
The IGNITE: Alternative Arts Academy is a program focused on the professional development of arts practice for people who identify as having lived experience of disability or mental health issues.
